Family Autumn getaway

We decided to get away for the first weekend of half term on a budget, and chose a ‘luxury’ static caravan in Oakdene, a Hoseasons holiday park situated in Ringwood, Dorset.  Now I had never been to a British holiday park before (a couple in France and Spain), nor stayed in a static caravan so my expectations were pretty low. (meaning I wasn’t convinced by the ‘tag’ luxury)

We were particular that it should be the New forest, as we love it there, (if you haven’t been you are missing out) and only 2 hour drive on a Friday evening.

When we arrived the park was what I imagined (even in the dark), entertainment already in full flow at 6pm as we checked in and the bar full of Friday night arrivals on their first or third tipple.

The caravan however was not what I expected at all and quite exceeded our expectations. (see pics) It was both spacious and cosy thanks to the fire heater, and very well equipped with plenty of storage room for a family carrying much ‘stuff’ to see them through a week let alone a weekend!  It appeared very safe for a family with young children but check it out for yourself   http://www.hoseasons.co.uk/lodges/oakdene-forest-vilg

We left the park and cycled all day, each day, after a lovely cooked breakfast ( well that’s what weekends away are all about, and we needed the fuel)   We had to transport bikes from Ringwood to a safer area in the 40mph zone of the forest before saddling up.  Once there, the scenery and calm were captivating with every part of the forest offerring something different to see and different terrains to cycle on.  Each day we tested a different pub for a late lunch.  The white Buck at Burley www.whitebuckburley.co.uk , was voted favourite of all with a great kids menu and serving all day.

Much to the children’s amusement, we came across many of the wild animals the New forest boasts, from large pigs (or boar- not sure how to tell the difference), to smaller pigs, horses, donkeys and ducks.  All were tame (although there are notices suggesting you don’t approach them , they were coming over to us each time)

So all in all,  an active yet relaxing time spent with the family in the fresh air for £259 (prices considerably lower out of school holidays) for 3 nights in the caravan (which includes use of facilities including indoor and outdoor pool).

VERDICT: Money well spent for a weekend we wouldn’t hesitate to repeat.
